I’m currently reading a book which is affecting me in a way no book has in a while.
It is The Order of the Day, by Eric Vuillard. A slim volume, it is an impressionistic history of two events leading up to World War II: the meeting where German oligarchs opened up their treasuries to bankroll Hitler’s final election campaign before he did away with elections; and the Austrian Anschluss.
The English translation is a poetic evocation of grubby deals and thuggery. And the way the subject matter is presented has evoked a reaction in me, to translate the prose into poetry, which speaks to the book’s matter, but also to our own current situation.
So, stay tuned. More will come over the next few days and weeks.
